American law = weird (or Torture if you ask Jeremy)

So I was doing some due dilligence (aka, trying not to freak out) on behalf of the Tres Ladies venture, and after speaking with a couple of trademark and copyright attorneys I learned/re-learned the following.  And guess what, since I’m not a lawyer I can share my random notes/interpretations because this isn’t legal advice.  Cool, huh?

  • you can’t protect an idea, suckas!
  • you’re pretty much screwed when/if you’re the little guy (something i saw unfairly happen time and time again in my previous jobs)—my interpretation
  • copyright is inherent to your designs when you “publish” them, and it’s not too late to file for a formal copyright if/when you decide to take someone to court for infringement
  • you better not send a cease & desist letter unless you mean business, and business means big $$$
  • a patent takes an average of 33 months from start to finish nowadays–thanks uspto
  • it sometimes takes the little guy 3-4 years to establish their tradedress, so i’ve got work to do

And finally, I learned what we all know but sometimes neglect…the world is about who you know.  I got in touch with a fantastic attorney that speaks my language and understands my world through a women’s entrepreneurial incubator I participated in.  Those five weeks of homework and long meetings were absolutely worth every thought, penny, and minute invested.  She even pointed me to an awesome blog where I’m hoping Tres Ladies will make an appearance: NonSociety.  They livecast instead of blog, and it’s so my way of thinking.  Love it!

Going earthy for your skin

So that botox-needy picture below got me researching more realistic to-do’s for my face.  Before I put strange organisms into it, I think I’ll start by “healthifying” my face routine.  I love my pink electronic clarisonic (rhymes!) facial brush!

I’m running out of my cleanser…so I’m eyeing the Terralina Gentle facial cleanser that is made with olive oil and botanical extracts.  All ingredients listed on the site, and with links so you can read what they are.  99% natural sounds good to me :)  STOREADORE should give you 20% off too!

And on that note, how about going earthy for your nails?
I read in the local paper (can’t remember which one) that there was a 15 minute manicure/20 minute pedicure salon at Dulles airport.  Since I’ve been flying pretty frequently lately, I’ve also been showing up to the airport more than 45 minutes before boarding.  That’s because I get to spend time discovering an awesome series of nail colors, lotions (green tea is my fav!), and other body care items.  Butter London was started in Seattle by some British chicks who wanted to create nail colors (+ base and top coats) that provide a 3-free non-toxic (sans formaldehyde, toluene or dibutyl phthalate (DBP)) formula.  The colors are great for fall/winter, fairly muted except for a few. Cream tea is a perfect alternative to Essie’s ballet slippers.  HRH is a stunning purple, great for toenails.  I recently added La Moss for a deep deep wine option too!  Love love looooooooooove!
